Just Women, Just Cancer, Just Hair

We claim to see Just Women, Just Cancer, Just Hair.  Twice in the last 24 hours I’ve been tested. What’s more important, standing by what we do or making sure that all of our appointment slots are full?  We’re a new business; it’s our first 6 months. However, the little voice in my head said, “What you’re doing for women with cancer is important.  There’s a reason we work only with women who have cancer”.  All of our wigs are specially designed for women in treatment. We don’t carry wigs that require adhesives because it will literally rip the skin off of ladies in treatment.  If you’re not undergoing cancer treatment you can get a wig just about anywhere. Granted, we customize them better than anyone out there, so I can see where people would like to try to get in.  I say this because it’s the absolute truth. This is my blog. I don’t lie.

First I got a call from a woman with alopecia, which is a condition where people lose hair as a result of an autoimmune disorder. This is a real medical disorder. I’ve known dozens of women suffering from this condition, which sometimes reverses itself, and sometimes doesn’t. To anyone with alopecia, I feel for you and I’m so sorry that you have this condition, but like I told Julie on the phone, we only see women undergoing cancer treatment.  We are experts in one field, cancer related hair loss.

My second test was less difficult.  I really struggled with the alopecia situation. In the past we have referred these ladies to my friend who is an alopecia expert, but this woman was pleading to get seen, and it was a tough call for me. Sheila sounds like a nice woman who just hates her thin hair and prefers to wear wigs. Again, there are so many places to go for a woman’s wig in Chicago. A healthy woman who, “hates her hair” is not a good fit us. I felt that we couldn’t properly fit her, since our inventory of over 100 wigs are all designed for women who are undergoing cancer treatment. I couldn’t personally offer her solutions to her problem. I did call her back and give her a few names of people who have salons and do wigs too. Hopefully, one of the many beauty salons that also offer wigs can help her out.
