A butterfly begins life as a caterpillar, and this larval stage soon transforms into a type of pupa known as a chrysalis. Chrysalis is from the Greek chrysós, or gold, from the golden, metallic color of the hard shell surrounding the pupa. Inside the chrysalis a remarkable transformation occurs. The caterpillar is not lost, but forever changed by its experience. When it emerges it is still made up of the same parts that entered the chrysalis. Nature transforms these parts into a thing of wonder and beauty, a butterfly.
