What Are The Reasons For Hair Thinning In Females?

Hormone-Related Thinning

Hormone related thinning and genetic predispositions increase the likelihood of suffering from thinning hair and loss of hair. The hormone responsible for hair loss is DHT or dihydrotestosterone. It is produced by testosterone and recognized as accelerating changes in the condition of your hair. Often a hair piece or “topper” can be used for the early stages of hair loss. More progressed thinning may require a full wig. A Chrysalis wig specialist can help determine which is going to work best for you.

Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases including alopecia areata will cause hair to fall out and/or thin. It is known to impact an average 147 million people across the world. Hair is compromised as the autoimmune response causes the hair follicles to narrow causing hair loss on the head and face. Sometimes this loss can be patchy. If  hair loss is patchy a topper or hair piece may be worn to add volume. Often hair will fall out then return only to fall out again.

Thyroid

Thyroid hormone imbalances over a prolonged period often contribute to thinned hair. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are responsible for thinning hair in women. Over time hair may get so thin that a wig for thinning hair becomes necessary.

Menopause and Age

During menopause estrogen and progesterone levels drop. This means the effect of the male hormones are increased. Menopause causes hair follicles shrink which makes hair grow slowly and often fall out. Age unfortunately can wreak havoc on your hair as well. As we age our hair naturally becomes thinner and weaker. Also known as involutional alopecia, hair may slip into a resting phase causing it to become shorter and thinner.  Custom wigs for thinning hair from Chrysalis Custom Hair can be made to create a more youthful head of hair. Often hair loss occurs in specific areas such as the crown of the head. Top pieces made of real human hair can be placed over these areas to add volume and fullness.

Chemotherapy Drugs

Chemotherapy drugs and radiation cause hair to fall out. Chemotherapy is the most common form of treatment targeting the cancer cells in the body. It also however, attacks the healthy cells and that includes your hair follicles. Chrysalis creates special wigs for cancer patients that look just like your own hair.

Chemical Hair Treatments

Chemical hair treatments like relaxers can make hair break or fall out. The application of harsh chemicals on the hair can cause thinning, loss and bald patches. Chemical treatment should always be professionally applied. Wigs for thinning hair can help give your hair a rest so that it has a chance to grow.

Nutritional Deficits

Nutritional deficits including conditions such as Anorexia, Obesity and Bulimia can cause hair to lack luster and fall out. Hair loss after gastric bypass surgery is also very common.

Medications

Medications can make your hair fall out. They can include , but are not limited to, blood thinners, depression, acne, and blood pressure medications, birth control, as well as medication for heart problems. Anti-rejection medications taken after an organ transplant also can drastic cause hair loss that may requite a wig for women.

Your custom wig can be worn over thinning hair. Chrysalis wigs are hand stitched so they fit comfortably over hair that is thinning. There is no need to cut off your hair or shave your head. You can simply tuck your own hair up underneath the wig.

The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the entire world. No one mentions on the news or media that it can also make your hair fall out. Some cases of Covid hair loss are drastic and some are mild. Some people have no hair loss at all. Be assured that it is normal to experience hair loss after  recovering from the virus. While the severity of hair loss varies from case to case, it is a common occurrence in about 10% of individuals who have tested positive for the virus. In most cases, it will grow back but this is a long process. Hair grows around 1/2 inch a month. To grow hair to a length that is able to be worn in a short cut takes about 10 months to a year.

Bariatric surgery has been known to have potential side effects including hair loss. This is due to nutritional deficits. It is important to note that not all patients who undergo bariatric surgery will necessarily experience hair loss.  The loss may be temporary but could become a more long term situation.

Thinning hair can often be made to look and feel fuller by simply clipping on a hair piece. Human hair toppers or “wiglets” are convenient solutions for thinning in women.

Woman with thinning hair wearing a dark brown human hair wig
Growing up I had the most beautiful long thick black hair. I used to have to have it thinned out just to be able to secure it with an elastic band. All through University and even after having 3 children my hair stayed lustrous and thick. Then as my late 40’s came about I noticed a change. By the time I was 50 it was so thin I barely recognized myself. I tried top pieces but they looked fake and slid right off. It was time to look to a professional for help. I was scared to call at first but I’m glad I worked up the courage eventually. Kimberly and her team were able to match my color and texture exactly. I’m over 50 so I decided to stick with shoulder length hair. I feel like me again. I wish I had found these ladies years ago!
